How to edit Dangan Ronpa Sprites feat. tumblr user Actualmondo / Yankeeboy : THE REMAKE

ahaha I don’t know why but I felt the strong urge to remake this old gem since I always try new things when editing.

♥DIFFICULTY LEVEL : I HOPE IT’S NOT THAT DIFFICULT
♥TUTORIAL LENGTH : HOPEFULLY NOT SUPER (DUPER UBER) LONG
♥TIME : 2-4 hours (Depending on the sprite design)

For this tutorial, I shall be spriting Machigeronpa!Sonia!

image

Let’s get started! Click ‘readmore’ if you are interested!

Now first off, since Machigeronpa is MACHIGERITA-P X DANGAN RONPA, Sonia’s sprite will be based off a Machi song called "Poison Princess" (feat. vocals by Konori).

  • PICK A SPRITE POSE!

image

This one seems quite perfect! Yes, she looks scared, but don’t worry, that’ll soon change. I chose this sprite because of the hands. Yes, Poison Princess is about a SPIDER PRINCESS, so Sonia will have 8 arms in the end.

  • OPEN SPRITE IN YOUR ART PROGRAM

image

I use Paint Tool Sai because i’m lame and it’s the only one I know how to use (besides Photoshop BUT LET’S NOT TALK ABOUT THAT). Anyways, hello Sonia!

Here is my sprite editing brush :

image

And this next one is important too. I use it to blend out of the stuff on faces instead of coloring over them with a pen.

image

I use the smallest size, 0.7. On some occasions, i use thicker settings, depending on the sprite.

  • EDIT THE FACIAL FEATURES FIRST

image

I zoom in to about 1200% percent. Using the thinnest brush, i draw lines where I will edit her eyes. After I edit the eyes, I remove any un-necessary parts, like the sweat, using the water brush. I also alter her mouth by drawing it on a new layer, coloring on the base sprite layer, and then flattening the thing all together. Her face should look like this now :

image

MUCH BETTER,YEAH.

  • ADD A BASE BACKGROUND COLOR ON A NEW LAYER.

image

Beneath the sprite layer, I make a new one, and paint it violet. Then, I hide the base background color layer, by clicking on the eye on the layers palette.

image

Then, I set the sprite’s transparency to a low setting.

image

If it’s from 10-30% or in between, you’re good to go! You want to be able to see the sprite while you draw the design.

  • CREATE A NEW LAYER ABOVE THE SPRITE LAYER, AND START DRAWING YOUR DESIGN!

Zooming in at 200%, I start drawing on the design. I don’t use refs, I just draw whatever I see fit. This either takes a short or long time. Using 0.7 pen size, let’s begin. Smoothly, and lightly (but of course add some pressure so it’s dark), draw the design.

{Lucky fer ya, I have already drawn the design. This is it}

image

Now, I raise back the transparency setting on the sprite so I can see where to erase.

image

This is a good setting. Now, where your brushes / color palette is, click the tiny checkered box.

image

This lil tool is UBER HANDY. It is a transparent brush! It’ll erase things fer ya with the brush you use! Now, begin erasing parts! Of course, only erase the areas where you are going to add color and stuff.

image

I need her arms, so we are not going to erase it. Only some areas, though.

image

Yeaaaaaah. We’re not quite ready yet to start coloring in the outfit. There are little areas in the base sprite that need fixing. Set the base sprite to ‘preserve opacity’ by ticking the lil’ box on top of of the layers box.

image

This way, you’ll only be able to draw/color on the sprite without having to mess up.

I take Sonia’s skin color (using the color picker tool)and color over that area where her former clothes where.

image

Now I do the same thing with that part in her hair.

image

image

Perfect! Now, we can begin coloring in the outfit.

  • CREATE A NEW LAYER BENEATH SPRITE, AND USING MAGIC WAND TOOL, CREATE BASE COLORING. THEN, COLOR!

Create a new layer, beneath the sprite. This is your base coloring for the outfit.

image

Now, using the wand tool, select the outer parts of the entire thing. Make sure your wand tool has these settings :

image

Anything below 50+- will work fine for selecting. You may possibly need to go lower if it doesn’t select the right areas.

image

Like this! (also, ignore the fact I colored in Sonia’s arms. They’re gloves. Yeah. Gloves.

Now, invert the selection.

image

image

Now, this is the important part. Take your pen brush tool, and just FILL IN THE ENTIRE AREA.

Oh wait here is my basic palette (Important) :

image

image

BAM! FILLED IN WITH WHITE. BUT DO NOT DE-SELECT THE LAYER YET. Inverse the selection again, so it’s on the outside. and then make sure you CLICK THIS :

image

This’ll clean up the edges, so it’s not pixel-like. After you do that, de-select it. And, if you see anything sticking out, use your pen brush (on the transparency setting) and erase out the excess areas.

image

WOWIE! There we go. Set that bad boy to ‘preserve opacity’ and begin shading, using the darker tone.

image

Heck yeah. Notice how I didn’t shade areas of the hair and skin. This next part is HELLA CRUCIAL. Make a clipping group layer on the base sprite color. Like so :

image

DO NOT SET THIS LAYER TO MULTIPLY. This is where you’ll do skin and hair. Just do it like how you normally do hair + skin on art! Make sure you avoid getting on the clothing. If you do, just erase it.

image

Perfect! Now, we can get to the actual coloring and stuff. Create another clipping group, but below the hair + skin layer.

image

image

Okay. See, the best part about this trick is that it colors beneath the hair and skin and doesn’t ruin it! Plus, you don’t have to grab different dark colors for every different hue! Really nifty. uwu)b Here’s another cool trick. If you want to add gradients to certain things, like the bow for example, temporarily set the layer to ‘preserve opacity’. Then, take your nifty airbrush tool and just go for it!

image

Yeeeeeee. How cool is that?! You can uncheck that ‘Preserve Opacity’ box now and go back to your regulatory shading yo. If you want, you can add gradients to other stuff as well! Just don’t go overboard yo.

image

Coloring is all done!

  • ADD IN ALL THE EFFECTS!

Probably the most funnest step out of all. Save a couple of times yo. Now, flatten all the sprite layers together.

image

Now, you can go wild with whatever, yo. I’m going to quickly edit her face.

image

BAM. I made a new layer, set it to multiply, changed her eye color to red, as well as add a bit of blush and lipstick. Also despair swirls.

Now, play around with the hue and saturation!

image

image

image

LOOK HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES. Now, you pretty much can do anything at this point. Add textures, more shades, highlights, etc. GO WILD WITH IT! Just don’t go overboard yo.

Okay …. I’m going to add some other stuff, like textures and blood! As well as more arms and a shadow to finalize the look.

ANNNNND ….. VIOLA!

image

Sonia’s still is complete! And, of course, since Machigeronpa sprites are always animated, I add that touch of movement (here is another tutorial for that) …..

Still :

image

Animated :

image

AND BAM! That is how i do the thing :)

Afterword :

image

i hope this tutorial helped in some way! i tried to screencap every step possible, so this is definitely the longest tutorial i have ever done. If you have any questions, comments, wanna strike up a conversation, blah blah blah, leave me an ask! I also have a version of my own SAI up, with all the brushes and textures i use on my blog description if you want that, and more tutorials and stuff in my tutorial / resources tag!Thank you for checking this excessively long but hopefully informative tutorial! ♥
